Avalanchepaw tried to get past Hickorypetal after his mentor left.
"I don't like this, Hickorypetal! I want to go back to camp and see my friends!" the apprentice screamed. He was completely shaking from fear and cold as well as the earthquake.

Hickorypetal tried to chase the fear from her eyes.
“You will! I promise. Let’s get to higher ground, so we can see what’s going on.” She suggested calmly, but traces of fear ran through her crackling voice and her pelt was standing on end.
She rested her long tail over the apprentice’s back and steered toward a small cliff, with various paw holds in the rock.
She could see splits in the stone where something was cracking, but she didn’t like the feeling of being so low, so easy to be crushed.
“Come on!” She called looking up the side of the wall with nervous, wide eyes. She had to get out of here, she had to make sure Avalanchepaw didn’t have a breakdown.
Snow was piled on top of the shaking stone, and little clumps were falling down. Nonetheless, Hickorypetal brought Avalanchepaw closer but she couldn’t bring herself to climb up.
Instead, she stood petrified at the bottom of the cliff, her mouth half open.
