Her ears were still upright, but she couldn’t catch any of what they were saying.
It seemed like Cliffstar’s death was repeating. For some reason, Hickorypetal felt the same, dawning sadness at this moment that she had when she had caught sight of the brown Himalayan tom being carried into camp.
She wasn’t the tiniest bit envious of Harestar. Hickorypetal felt pity. Leader at only eighteen moons. Hickorypetal had been one of the cats to silently protest Harestar being named leader. How could one so young hold a position of power? She could count off maybe five older warriors who could do a better job.
That was what she had thought. Now, Hickorypetal could understand. Harestar was young, and would be able to lead Albaclan. But what would happen next?
It was like making a kit a warrior. They knew nothing of battle and bloodshed and loss. Fury and love and disappointment. Except, Harestar was strong and a good fighter with a careful mind.
But what about wisdom? Even Hickorypetal herself was young to be deputy; but she was over ten moons older then Harestar.
Wisdom came with time. Hickorypetal would also give her new leader time. Wisdom cannot be earned, it is collected. It does not come with the changing of ranks. It is gathered by past mistakes, and the mistakes of others.
Her eyes glazed, she thought of her mother. So bright and a wonderful huntress, with prowess better than any in the clan. If only she had stayed... Brightpetal would have been deputy, maybe Leader if she had stayed! She had been so capable and willing to help, it would be no surprise if she was selected to be in line for the roles ahead of her.
She had been such a likable, diligent warrior. No wonder Hickorypetal had wanted her suffix to be an echo of her mother.
Letting out a puff of hot air, she watched as her warm exhale turned to a foggy array of ice crystals floating like a mist in front of her muzzle.
It was in fact a mighty feat for a leader to make it this far. Sure, she was unconscious, but she was back at camp. Harestar had proven something today. Even Hickorypetal herself, the boastful and powerful fighter and determined hunter, doubted that she could make the journey alive in this weather.
Not to worry though, green-leaf was nearing them each and every day. Prey would prosper once more, and Hickorypetal could test the strength of Albaclan.
The sudden death by snakes had rattled her. Cliffstar had always been a distant figure, but strong and he seemed... invincible! How could him of all felines perish at the jaws of prey?
It was almost poetic. Cliffstar died, along with the deputy, Fallingfeather. It left two ranks open and ready for a new heiress. Harestar, Cliffstar’s direct offspring, had taken the challenge. Young and foolish, but she showed dignity and courage.
Hickorypetal arose, her large tufted feet leaving broad imprints in the snow.
It was time to stop wondering.
It was time to halt her thoughts about Harestar.
It was time to see if her new leader was alright, and could take on the wilderness.
Tucking her long, flowing tail inbetween her back legs, she briskly trotted over to the medicine den.
If she wasn’t wanted she would leave.
If not, she would stay to make sure Harestar was back up and running in the shortest amount of time.
Reaching the entrance, she paused, pinning her ears to her head. Poking her muzzle first, she entered the den. It was much warmer by comparison inside, What with the cats’ breath and body heat managing to add a thermal coating inside, and she relished the more delightful interior.
The scent of musky herbs and pungent poultices stand the inside of her nose, and she wrinkled her bridge in disgust.
“May I come in? If not, I’ll wait outside.” She asked, calling to the black figure which was Iciclebreeze.

Owl ' Frost moved to respond, "Go ahead, Icicle ' Breeze is currently tending to Hare ' Star at the moment though!" Icicle ' Breeze hadn't looked over to really see who was there, as she was still deciding on some things. Astral ' Drop was still trying to open Hare ' Star's mouth. Icicle ' Breeze just decided to stand up and go to collect more herbs, besides the feverfew she was holding. The tuxedo she moved to collect chamomile, juniper, and poppyseed.

Harestar gained consciousness once more as she felt the wave of heat upon entering the medicine den. The she-cat slowly opened her eyes and saw a paw trying to force her mouth open. She had a moment of panic before she scented Astraldrop and hesitantly opened her mouth. Then, out of the corner of her eye, Harestar saw her deputy.
"Hickorypetal?" she managed to say.

Hickorypetal nodded. Iciclebreeze had been Albaclan’s Medicine Cat for awhile now, and she trusted Harestar’s life fully when it was in the black molly’s paws.
It had been hard at first. Hickorypetal was not one to trust easily. After her mother’s disappearance and her father’s sudden death, it had been difficult, of course.
For some reason, whenever a cat in Albaclan changed ranks, she felt like she couldn’t trust them. She couldn’t anchor herself on the thought that they were to be responsible for many feline’s lives. If the leader wanted to make a bad move in battle, and a deputy supported their decision, then they would come back with more than a few casualties.
Then, if a medicine cat couldn’t be trusted with a life essence, Starclan would be bursting its banks with recent deaths.
Hickorypetal slunk quietly into the den, her long fur brushing the floor as she arose like a snake to loom over Harestar’s still and unmoving body, which was lying down on its side. Her face was rigid, almost frozen like the sharp and angry icicles of the north.
The only sign of life that came from her was the faint movement of her chest. It rose and fell like a feather would, gently and unnoticed.
Harestar was much too young to experience such harsh things. Barely any leaders made it halfway, but she had passed out. Only in greenleaf did anyone excel at this journey.
Still, she was back. Albaclan had a Leader to guide them through the darkness. As Hickorypetal said this in her mind, she felt the huge weight of her shoulders suddenly turn to air, light and cool on her neck.
Her brown fur settled as she planted her haunches into the warm ground of the den. She rather liked it in here, and Iciclebreeze was one of her favorite cats. Very patient and she knew how to handle cats and diseases alike.
She surveyed every motion that occurred in the small expanse of the room. Nests were lined everywhere for other sick patients, and herbs were stuffed tightly into piles everywhere. When she had been an apprentice, she had sprained her leg. She remembered the bitter smell of the herbs used in the poultice she had to wear everyday. When she had complained of the stench, the medicine cat at that time forced her to chew her own mash, so that she would know what he had to go through.
She purred quietly, the memory warming her cold bones. She had always used this trick on rowdy apprentices.
Suddenly, Hickorypetal’s head snapped to Harestar, who was moving loudly in her nest.
“Harestar,” She meowed flatly. “You’re awake.”
Her voice was not bitter, nor envious, but just flat because she didn’t want worry to show through her mask of stone. The death of Cliffstar was fresh on everyone’s minds, they didn’t need another leader to perish.
“Foolish thing you did, passing out in the drifts.” She purred jokingly. She didn’t want Harestar to see her nervousness, but the cream and brown Himalayan shecat didn’t need stark rude from her deputy, one who was supposed to stay by her side.
Hickorypetal rested her tail on Harestar’s flank. “Stay still for a moment. Would you like anything from the killpile? To eat when Iciclebreeze is finished, of course. Just nod yes or no.” She was sure to be hungry, and if she had been so riddled with fatigue that she fainted, she would need some form of food.

Harestar nodded slowly, staring at the stone wall in front of her.
Hickorypetal reminded the she-cat of her own father. No wonder he had wanted her to be deputy. Their similarities were what comforted Harestar as this was happening. She felt as if he was still there.
Of course, he wasn't, and this realization made Harestar realize how weak she was. Her paw pads were completely frozen and her legs were stiff as branches. She couldn't walk even if she tried to, not to mention her slight fever. The she-cat winced and let out a whimper as the cold once more got to her head.

Astral ' Drop noticed her leader's mouth open, then dripped the honey, "Please swallow this, it'll make it easier for the herbs to get down." She asked. Icicle ' Breeze had turned around and walked over, she signaled with her head towards Owl ' Frost, who had walked over and started licking Hare ' Star's fur the wrong way. Icicle ' Breeze's mind had wandered for a second as she stared off at the sky, 'I wonder how Hare ' Star's lives went.. I've heard their incredibly painful.. And tiring, I guess that's why most leaders have passed out..'

Harestar was having a hard time moving her frozen mouth and had to just let the honey slide into her throat. Of course, her throat was also frozen from breathing the cold air and another problem arose.
She started gasping and gagging and wheezing as the honey got stuck in her throat. She was choking.

Hailstrike had entered camp right as Harestar was being carried into the medicine
cat den, concern glittered in his icy gaze. He dropped the mouse he had in his jaws onto the pile and noticed
Stormeye not far off. He sat a tail length away from the tom and kept a comfortable distance. "Do you know
what's going on?" He asked in a gruff voice, "Is Harestar ok?"

Stormeye shook his head, still trying to see inside of the medicine den." No.I just saw Harestar being carried into the camp. She looked unconscious though."Stormeye told Hailstrike, turning to face him."You don't think something went wrong do you?She will be OK right?"He asked hopefully, hoping that Hailstrike knew something else about this that Stormeye didn't.

Hailstrike noticed the hope in Stormeye's gaze so he recalled his hunt, trying to think of anything unusual he had
noticed but nothing came to mind. "I didn't see anything while I was out." He replied with grunt. His whiskers
twitched in annoyance, I wish I could do more to help. I also wish I knew what to say. He glanced at the warrior,
"I'm sure she will be ok. Perhaps she's exhausted from her nine lives ceremony." Still worry gripped Hailstrikes
stomach, maybe something had gone wrong though? He shook his pelt, sitting here and worrying wont do any good!
"Maybe we could do something to help?"
