RiverClan Territory

Firehawk trotted through the territory, tasting the air as he slowed his pace. The cold was making it difficult to detect any prey, and it was hard to be surprised when their home had recently been reclaimed following a massive battle on their territory. He'd be amazed if the patrol found anything. At the rate they were going, they would need to extend their hunting outside RiverClan territory. It wasn't like fishing was a viable source of food when the river was frozen over.

Moonrise caught Riverclan's scent as she crept through the territory. She thought she would never see Spiritflight again, but here she was on their old territory. She heard noises and hid underneath a bush. She beg as n to rub her fur in the mud to hide her scent.

Cloverleaf opened his mouth, trying to find the the smallest hint of prey smell. He smelled something. Mouse? He followed it, thankfully finding a tiny mouse. He skillfully pounced on it and buried it before returning to the group. “Not much out today, eh?” He said. “Maybe we should try to break through the ice. It would be freezing, but it would be something to eat.”

Scarfang huffed. Maybe Cloverleaf was right. "Yeah, maybe that would work." He conceded, "We definitely need the fish."
He stretched thoughtfully, a mouse and dead bird at his paws. He gazed at Firehawk and Cloverleaf, wondering how they would respond to him.

He stretched thoughtfully, a mouse and dead bird at his paws. He gazed at Firehawk and Cloverleaf, wondering how they would respond to him.

Relieved that someone agreed with him, Cloverleaf nodded at Scarfang. “Well, first we should see how thick the ice is.” He trotted over to the frozen river and started clawing at it. After many claws, the tips of his paw began to go numb from the freezing water. “Give me a hand here, please!” He said, digging at the ice with both paws now. Hopefully, the fish would be slow, so they wouldn’t have to break very much ice. “Do you think we could use teeth as well?” He asked.

Scarfang walked over to the tom, and began clawing at the ice. A few small pieces crumbled and fell into the sluggishly moving water. After a moment, his forepaws went numb. He stopped and sat, licking his paws to soothe the numbness and warm him up. "I don't think we should use our teeth, just claws." He nudged Cloverleaf. "I managed to tear a few chunks off. See if you can open a bigger area."

(hey guys, cats wouldn't be able to break through the ice of a frozen river. they wouldn't be strong enough and it'd likely damage their claws)

Firehawk gave his companions a puzzled look as they he aded toward the icy river, and he made no move to join them on the ice. "I don't think what you're doing will work." After quietly speaking, he scented the air again, detecting a vole, and he dropped into a crouch to follow the trail down the bank.

With a sigh, Cloverleaf gave up. "Firehawk is right. It's far too thick for our claws." He then continued scenting the air for prey he could actually catch. Smelling another mouse, he stalked away.

Scarfang grunted his agreement and stalked off into the reeds by the edge of the river. Seeing a water vole nibbling on a grass stalk, he shot forward, grabbing it. With a muffled squeak, another vole rushed out of the reeds. Scarfang dropped his previous catch and lunged for it. Squealing, it dodged his claws and he clumsily fell onto the ice, it gave a massive shudder and with a deafening crack, the ice gave way and he fell into the water below with a howl.
"Help me!" He screeched, his voice gurgling as water seeped in and he was carried downstream underneath the ice.

The vole had gone further than he thought, and the sound of Scarfang's yowls distracted him from the hunt as he glimpsed the warrior's plunge into the cold water.

Instantly, he was on the move. They were lucky the ice had slowed the usually fast-moving river down considerably, and Firehawk was able to catch up to him along the bank. He didn't hesitate, throwing himself into the water and rapidly kicking his legs to swim toward Scarfang's panicking form. Firehawk stretched his neck, reaching to grab his scruff so he could drag him back to safety.
