• Ravenpaw •
mottled black-and-white molly with gleaming yellow eyes
Purrks: N/A

_________________________________________________

So this dock was a plant that grew low to the ground and large leaves grow from its center? That sounded more than easy enough to remember! It was a bit unfortunate that Dawny didn’t have much notice of what the plant looked like or what it was used for, but the bicolored feline didn’t have much thought for it. Dawny wasn’t going to be the one-and-only-one that knew everything just automatically; everyone doesn’t carry such a weird feat like that. While the group had been trekking through the Shadow’s Break, the young feline couldn’t help but ponder her eyes around the dimly lit area, eying mainly the small pond and the marsh-lands that decorated the forest floors. It was indeed a pretty little area, even if it was rather small and spooky for somewhere that she would go personally. It wasn’t exactly her style, but she will deal with it anyways. The sound of Darkfall and Rufflepaw speaking grew into the sound of white notice in her ears as the mottled molly silently explored a small bit of the area. Sure, it was definitely against what she was actually supposed to do, but she was curious. She wanted to explore, and this place seemed like a very cool place to start!

Her ears quickly alerted up towards the sound of Dawny speaking again, mainly focused towards her direction when she ordered for her to look for the herb in case she sees it and to call the tabby over in case she found one. Wow, Dawny was trusting her to find the herb on her own in her first patrol? How exciting! Nodding eagerly, a wide grin smacked itself onto the sides of her maw. “Of course, Dawny! I’ll look for it!” she exclaimed with a purr and ecstatic lash of her tail, the apprentice quickly dashing around a fox length away from her mentor to quickly begin her searching. Scrunching up her nose, the molly began to silently nose around the marshy ground for anything that was going to look different in particular than what was already there; she used her mismatched forepaws to help feel around for anything that felt like a weird little leaf that was growing out of the ground, only to come across just more and more grass along the way. Frustration was almost quick to seep into her grasp, the bicolored feline swishing her tail along her flanks irritably as she continued to node the ground. Dock. Dock. Dock. Where in the world was this weird dock? How were they espoused to find a herb if they didn’t even know what it fully looked like out of context?

Huffing out of irritation, the bicolored feline silently stomped her mismatched paws as she gave up momentarily on trying to find the stupid herb. How was she supposed to point something out if she didn’t even know what it looked like? It was dumb! Then again, Dawny wanted her to try to find the herb on her own and call out to her if she found it, so she guessed that she was going to need to keep trying to find the weird herbs until she found something that was relevant. Letting out yet another irritating huff, Ravenpaw snuck her nose down onto a rather random pile of nettles and leaves that she had just stumbled across at, nosing around the small pile to see if she could at least find something that Dawny could take a look at. Just as the young bicolored feline was about to merely give up and waltz back to her mentor empty pawed, a sharp, tangy smell caught the attention of her sentsitive nose, her brows furrowing as she drifted her head towards the direction of the scent that she had just caught. What in the world was that? Peering closer, the young apprentice decided to further inspect the smell as she nudged her nose through the nettles, using a paw or so to move some out of the way so she could peer closer at the scent that she was following. After moments of nudging snd nosing plants away, yellow hues glanced downwards towards a dark green plant that was growing near the ground; leaves decorating around its center as it looked quite familiar to the leaves that would grow among a tree. Not only that, but the plant itself carried a rsther tangy smell that eliminated off its surface. Could this be it? It fitted the description of what Dawny wanted to find, and it looked close in identical to what she probably wanted, so it was most likely it.

“Dawny! Dawny! I think I found it! I think I found it! Come look!” She trilled, yanking her head upwards as she called out to her mentor, the mixture of nettles and leaves from the bushes brushing along her sides rustling as she eagerly called out for her mentor with gratitude and pride gleaming in her yellow eyes. Would Dawny be proud of the fact that she possibly found it? Would she be willing to give her a compliment about finding a herb that Elmshadow needed? Who knew, she wasn’t the kind that could easily read minds. She just had to find out for herself.

Finally out of camp and in the comfort of Shadowclan territory, Snowecho pads along the fertile ground silently. They weren't one for conversation, so unless Deerpaw had more questions to rattle off as they made their way to Shadow's Break, the journey is quiet. Curiously, they glance from tree to tree, admiring the way that life found a way to grow up the bark of such tall beings... It must be nice to be a mushroom. Existing peacefully, no war, no threats... Well, aside from being eaten or torn apart. But that was a concern that he had now anyway so how different was the fear, really?

He raises his head and opens his mouth to scent the air, memories of hunting here slowly beginning to flood back to him. Mice. There were mice here, a lot of them... Another glance is shot back at the apprentice and they flick an ear, as if to signal that prey was nearby.

There weren't many times in his life where Deerpaw was allowed to leave camp. He'd been out with his mentor once or twice, but most of their territory was unfamiliar to him still. The scents around them smelled of ShadowClan, though, of home and safety and... well... maybe not quite love, but definitely home and safety. He really wanted to keep asking questions, to prattle off every single thought that crossed his mind, but they got the impression that Snowecho didn't particularly enjoy all their questions- even if he didn't say so.

Still, this was his first hunting patrol outside of training and Deerpaw was eager to prove themself useful. Mimicking Snowecho's actions, he opened his mouth and scented the air, breathing in the cool and slightly damp air in the dense and dark forest around them. Tilting his head at the flick of Snowecho's ear, Deerpaw breathed in again, this time concentrating herder on the smells around them and not only focusing on the scent of their clan, their home. Faintly, he caught a brief whiff of mouse and his ears perked up, glancing over to his warrior escort for direction on what to do next.

Aware, eager... They liked that. Deerpaw had come off a little overwhelming at first. Nonstop questions, prodding, the excitement to be on for a hunt... But watching closely how he mimics his own actions and catches on to what he's scented so quickly... It almost makes him proud. If the little one was his apprentice he would compliment him up and down. But this wasn't his apprentice, unfortunately. So they will those thoughts from their head and turn to look foward again. Head raised and ears perked for the slightest scuffle amongst the underbrush, the scent of mouse grows stronger and they know they're on the right track. It had been some time since they hunted-- in all honesty, they figured that they were going to fail miserably, held back by the fear of going out again. But the familiarity of the hunt has his blood pumping.

With a flick of his tail to signal that they were to move, Snowecho lowers into a crouch, stepping carefully over moss and grass. Target in sight, he watches the rodent nibble at it's seed unaware, before looking back to Deerpaw. First, he would give a demonstration. Creeping forward, he stays low... And when the mouse notices his presence it's already too late. He's slipped out from the shadows and trapped it beneath his paws, claws unsheathed. Silently he thanks Starclan for his success before delivering the killing bite to it's neck, waiting for it to stop squirming before looking back to Deerpaw.

They nod to him and bury the first catch before turning and looking at him expectantly. Silently. It was his turn to try.

As the warrior moved to a crouch, inching forward minuscule pawstep by minuscule pawstep, Deerpaw lowered himself into a similar crouch, but he didn't move forward with Snowecho, concerned that both of them creeping toward the rodent would alert it. Like a seasoned professional and with almost no warning at all that Deerpaw could see, the older tom leaped forward, silently and swiftly dispatching the little creature. The young apprentice couldn't help the grin that spread over his face when Snowecho made the catch, bobbed tail standing straight up and coming out of their own crouched position rather quickly. They almost wanted to say something, and even opened their mouth to do so, until they realized that Snowecho was still silent. If he spoke now would he scare prey away? Surely one comment wouldn't hurt? Snowecho wouldn't scold him for saying something, would they? Deerpaw didn't think so, but if he did speak and scare any nearby prey away in the process then certainly Snowecho would at the very least be displeased, so he didn't risk it.

It was his turn to scout something out and catch it for the clan. Deciding against breaking the almost reverent silence that surrounded the two of them, Deerpaw padded forward a little, head held high and mouth open. Breathing in deeply, they closed their eyes, seeing what scents were carried his way.

He heard it almost before he smelt it, a quiet scurrying in the undergrowth maybe a fox length or two away. Mouse. His ears turned toward the noise and his eyes scanned the area but he saw nothing just yet. Maybe if he got closer? Flattening himself to the ground, he glanced back to Snowecho, looking for permission to proceed.

Impressive.

That is the first word that comes to mind as he pays close attention to the apprentice's behavior. Part of him was scared that he wouldn't take the hint and alert the abundant prey in the area of their presence. As he pads forward and scents the air just as they had done, they cannot help the small smile that appears on their face. Whoever was mentoring this one, they would be sure to report to. It was a shame that his first hunt was with someone as pathetic as he was. Any other warrior would be capable of teaching him so much more than this.

Almost in perfect sync, the noise draws Snowecho's attention as well, head turning in the direction of the scurrying. Ever since the loss of his right eye, had had noticed that his hearing had gotten a bit better. So the fact that Deerpaw had noticed it too meant it was indeed quite close. Their eyes meet and the warrior just offers the other a nod, taking a seat in his spot. There was no need to watch over him so closely. If he was successful, he would bring it back to them to be buried with the other. Simple as that. Perhaps this wasn't going to be such a bad hunt after all.

Permission granted, Deerpaw shifted the weight on his paws, repositioning himself slightly before he started to creep forward. His hunting crouch wasn't perfected yet, his butt was still usually raised too high and he had a hard time shaking his habit of wiggling before pouncing - it was something he used to do when play hunting as a kit, and perhaps he should've been scolded for that back in the nursery, but in there there was no threat of real prey being alerted to your presence. Creeping forward ever so slightly more, amber eyes caught sight of the mouse, a fat one by the looks of it, definitely good for the clan to have.

Deerpaw licked his lips and crouched just slightly lower, bringing his feet under him for a more powerful push... and accidentally brushed a leaf that alerted the mouse and sent it scampering away. "No!" He hissed under his breath, pouncing after the creature with a quick burst of speed and managing to step on its tail mostly by accident before he quickly brought his mouth down on its neck and silenced it. Glowering a little because the thing had both gotten away from him at first and its startled squeak definitely alerted all the other mice in the area, Deerpaw brought the thing back over to where Snowecho sat waiting and dropped it at his feet.

"Sorry," he apologized, dipping his head, "I think I ruined this spot for a little while."

It was to be expected hunting with a young one so inexperienced. Snowecho pays close attention to his movements and his stance as he begins his hunt, taking notes on how it could be improved... It was obvious the apprentice hadn't gone through any proper hunting training. At this point they were certain. The important thing was that prey was caught. In the end a successful hunt was a successful hunt, even if the hunting moving forward would be made a bit more difficult. Worse case scenario the apprentice could have come back with empty paws AND they would have to move locations. So he couldn't be mad. Well, if he was even capable of being mad, anyway...

"I-It's alright, don't worry..." Was that reassuring enough? Praise from someone as pathetic as him probably meant as much as an insult. Burying the mouse dropped at their paws near the one they had caught moments ago, they turn their attention to the dejected apprentice once more. "There are plenty more mice around here... Just try to be more careful, okay?"

Was it right for them to be giving advice? It would certainly make their hunting go a bit more smooth... Clearing his throat, he gets the young one's attention once more, barely able to make eye contact.

"For next time, though... Just try to keep your body level when you're crouching... A-And the less movement, the better... The more you move the more you risk alerting your prey... I don't mean to tell you what to do, though."

Tilting his head slightly, brows knit together in confusion, Deerpaw asked "but aren't you supposed to give me pointers? Can only an apprentice's mentor give him help? That's kind of silly, don't you think? Why shouldn't any warrior on patrol with an apprentice be allowed to offer advice? Does Dawnstar not like it? I think she'd be happy for as many apprentices to get as much knowledge wherever we can, that way we're warriors faster! Don't you agree?" Question after question after question. It was hard to stop once he got started, but there was just so many things to learn that it was only reasonable he ask every question he could think of! What if he never got to ask something that could save a cats life later? "Besides, I don't think Blackpath would mind you giving pointers - that means there's less for him to teach me!" Deerpaw giggled a little bit at his own comment.

It wasn't that he disliked his mentor, he actually really respected Blackpath a great deal, but they'd only been out once so far and Deerpaw hadn't felt a strong connection with him, nor did he feel like he really learned a lot especially after their hunting practice was cut short. But no matter, at least he even knew how to hunt! That was sure to count for something, right?

"Besides, I don't think Blackpath would mind you giving pointers - that means there's less for him to teach me!" The headache starts again... So many questions, it makes their head spin. Was he to answer every single one? How was he to focus on hunting when he had to recite his knowledge and opinions. They heave a sigh. A very heavy sigh.

"I suppose it is... I just don't think I'm qualified to teach you anything..." Staring at the ground, the tom continues his rambling. "A warrior as pathetic as me... There's nothing I could teach you that would help you. It's a wonder that I didn't scare all the prey away... It's a wonder I caught anything at all."

Frustration builds visibly on their face, brows knitting tight and ears flattening against their head. All this talking was getting them no where. If they didn't bring back enough prey, he would be punished for sure... He shakes his head as if that alone would will the thoughts from his mind.

"Sorry, sorry... I'll do my best... We should just continue. We shouldn't waste time."
