The towering spires of skeletal trees cast ominous shadows across the mossy forest floor. The sky above was perpetually dark, stuck in a starless twilight. There were whispers and distant movement echoing through the desolate clearing, but the most foreboding sound was the telltale crunch of pawsteps against the leaf litter.
A huge, Longhaired ginger she-cat emerged from the shadowy Bracken, her pelt fringy and dull; hanging on her frame like drapings of lichen. Her eyes glowed lambent emerald in the oppressive dusk.
She offered Palepaw a nearly unsettling smile, fangs glinting faintly.
“Welcome, young one.”
