I thought he could resist the current- his namesake.
I was wrong.

I hope not. He doesn’t deserve it. He should rot in the Dark Forest forever.
I’m the river. It’s my fault I let you drown…
Have you seen me? My mate, my kits?
I love her so much I forgot about you for a few heartbeats.
One more thing to feel guilty about.

Under the waves.
Running to your side when they brought you back
Refusing to believe you were gone because you were all I had.
Every day I wish you were here by my side.
Not a day goes by that I don’t miss you.
To bring you back I’d do anything.
Pass the time by watching the river.
Asking why it took you away.
When I look at the stars, I see your face.

Easy catch, you protested as I congratulated you.
Running through the reeds like there was no tomorrow, laughing as I weaved around them.
Water lapping at our paws, innocent as we didn’t know it would kill me one day.
Hickorysnap, a well-respected warrior, said “Good catch,” and you looked embarrassed.
I swiped a trout out of the water and turned, not noticing the wave creeping up behind me.
Screamed as the wave pulled me under, my muffled cries unheard.
Paw shot above the water, flailing before being dragged back under.
Eyes flutter open blurrily as you come running over and bury your nose in my fur.
Raspy purrs escaped my throat before everything went black.
