Alone - Echowind

[I don't know if this is allowed, so if it isn't please tell me.]

Cinder's eyes watered as Shell left. I don't love you. I never did. The words rang in her head. Why had she been so... So stupid? "Goodbye, kit," she murmured before running away, leaving a tiny silver molly on the ground, mewling for help.

The tiny silver tabby mewled for help. Milk! I want milk! She was hungry, and she desperately tried to find food. Of course, there wasn't much a newborn kit could do other than squirm around. And then... She heard a voice.

Not the voice that had talked to her when she was first born, that voice was gone. A different one, comforting, sympathetic. Her mews grew louder as she smelled the milky scent this cat possessed.

And then something picked her up. She wasn't sure what was happening, just that someone was taking her somewhere. Where? She wanted to know! And finally the cat put her down. She was somewhere warm. At least warmer than the frosty grass she had been on before.

"Hi little one," the voice purred softly. The kit just mewed in response, squirming her way over. "Do you want milk?" She placed the silver kit next to her belly, allowing her to suckle. She did for a few minutes, before letting out a contended sigh and falling asleep, curled up by her 'mother's' belly. The kit grew up thinking this cat was mom.

"Mom!" Seven moon old Echo rammed into the white cat who went by the name of Frost. In her jaws was a scrawny vole. It would be enough to feed both of them for the time being.

Frost smiled at her. "Good job," she praised her adopted daughter. "But it's green-leaf. Why don't we catch some more?" Echo nodded and ran off, Frost chasing after her.

Frost sighted a mouse and pounced, but the mouse scurried away. "Dang it!" she scolded herself.

Echo's whiskers twitched in amusement. "You'll get one."

"Yeah. Let's g-" She stopped mid word, her ears alert and her nose twitching. "Dog," she whispered. "Run!"

Echo's amber eyes widened and she nodded fearfully. Now she could hear the awful barking sound, getting louder and louder. She bolted, running as fast as her slim legs could carry. A moment later Frost appeared beside her.

But it was too late.

The dogs were faster, and caught up to them. Echo screamed as one launched itself at her and bit into her ear. After a moment it tore away, taking her with it. Her screams only got louder as teeth dug into the her leg, and eventually let go.

Ignoring the excruciating pain to walk to Frost, who's white fur had turned blood red. Her eyes were shut, and her breathing was shallow. "Frost!"

Green eyes opened a little, and looked into amber ones. "Run, Echo," the older she-cat rasped, before her breathing stopped completely.

Tears of grief filled the silver molly's eyes, but there was no time for that. She ran, faster than she ever thought she could.

After a few minutes of running, she was sure the dogs were gone. Tears streamed from her eyes. The only cat who loved me... Is gone. My mother is gone. What now?

To be continued...
