Lost Illusion

Zia sat down, her green gaze flitting from tree to tree in search of prey. It was leafbare, and prey was sparse, but it was just her, so she needn't worry. She sighed, looking up towards the cloudy blue sky. Usually, she waited until dusk to come out, but it had grown too cold bonce the sun had sunk below the horizon, and she'd broken her habit somewhat. Scanning the surroundings, which consisted of a few sparse pines, some dry and dead looking bushes, and a few mountains off in the distance. Heading off towards the mountains was a wide, winding river that was too fast to get covered over by ice, and lay exposed and empty.

The thick furred and rather stocky molly set off again, this time heading towards the river in hopes of a duck or some fish, not that she actually knew how to catch fish, but right now, Zia was so hungry that she wasn't going to pass up any opportunities. She looked around, tasting the air. It had been a couple moons since her last visit in the Place of No Stars, and wondered why. Flicking her tail, she wondered if it would be worth the trouble of tracking down that murderous self absorbed tom called Onyx and perhaps paying him a little visit.

Shaking herself, she stopped on the bank, staring into the freezing depths of dark, swirling water, crossing fish off the list of things she would try and catch. She knew instantly that she was too stocky and heavy to swim, and would probably drown trying, and if not, she would freeze to death come nightfall.

Sprocket yawned loudly as he kneaded his claws into the ground. He had taken a small nap after eating a very scrawny mouse, it hadn't been enough to fill him up but it filled him up enough to stop his stomach from growling so loudly. He took in the cold air, he loved the cold even though there was rarely any food around this time. His short, but thick pelt kept him pretty warm but his paws were freezing.

While taking in the scents around him Sprocket could smell a river nearby. He perked his ears and listened carefully and he soon began to hear the roaring river. 'I could go for a drink!' he thought before bounding off towards the river. Even if he was hungry, leafbare made him so happy. Maybe it was because it was when he met his friend Ice and finally left those mouse brained Twolegs.

He slowed his pace as he got closer to the river, he sniffed the air carefully. He could smell another cat nearby and his heart began to pick up pace. He really wasn't in the mood to fight but he knew cold, hungry cats were not ones to mess with. He hoped the cat would just leave him alone, as he was also hungry and cold. He bent his head down slowly to take a small drink of the roaring river, careful to not fall in. He wouldn't be able to swim back to land if he fell in, he was just too small. He also kept his ears perked as he drank, waiting for any sign of the other cat to make a move.

Zia raised her head as she caught the scent of another cat. After a moment, she spotted them. A dappled tom drinking from the river maybe a tree length away. Flattening her ears, the thick furred molly crept a bit closer, trying to see if he'd noticed her. It looked like he might've, but it seemed obvious that he hadn't seen her yet. Stopping by a small patch of snow, she lowed her head, swallowing a few mouthfuls of the cold icy powder. It was safer than drinking from the river, and less likely to get her noticed.

Then she leaped up, landing lightly on a nearby boulder, her fluffed up fur making her look even bigger than she actually was. She wasn't in the mood to fight. Anyways, it would scar away any prey that may be hiding close by. “Who are you?” she asked, her tail twitching. She forced herself to look and sound friendly, but her voice carried with it a hint of uncertainty to it. It also seemed a tad bit more demanding than friendly, which had not been her goal. Quickly she sat down, wrapping her short, thick tail over her paws.

She didn't want to pick a fight, as that could easily prove fetal in many ways, and she had no interest in getting herself killed because she couldn't back down without a fight. She knew that her father had been killed without a fight, but she wasn't ready. Sighing, she watched, waiting to see how the smaller dappled tomcat would react to her question, or if he had even noticed at all. She knew that some cats tended not to notice when they were being spoken to if they were preoccupied with some other matter.

Sprocket could sense movement but kept drinking, his anxiety was getting to him and he kept telling himself to calm down. He didn't dare to look up and try to spot the cat, his heart pounded against his chest. He kicked himself mentally once again for his anxiety.

He froze completely when a stocky black she-cat jumped onto a boulder and asked who he was. His ears twitched nervously and he took a few moments to become unfrozen. He closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths, his anxiety didn't go away but it helped a bit. He lifted his head and looked at the cat.

He could tell she wasn't normally a friendly cat, he had spent enough time with Ice to know the signs. But he was glad the cat was trying to sound friendly, meaning they didn't want a fight. "Um.. My name is Sprocket. Who are you?" He asked, his country accent coming out. He tried to hide it at times but it was hard when he was nervous.

Zia shifted, wondering if it would've been better to simply leave without a word, but she shook herself, her fur prickling up. That was no way to act. That was a coward's voice in her head, not her own. The sunlight caught the reddish patches iin her fur, making them seem more prominent than before, and she quickly sidestepped out of the sun into a nearby shadow.

She took a deep breath, then let out in a long, shaky sigh before stepping back from the shadow. “Zia. It's... good to meet ya, Sprocket.” she said, her voice low, but not in an entirely unfriendly tone. Since fighting would do no good, she could pretend to make friends with him, but to her surprise, she found that some of the friendliness she was attempting at wasn't fake, and was genuine. It'd been a long time since she'd actually been friendly towards anyone.

Sitting down with a mildly puzzled expression on her face, she gazed at the brownish-cream and white dappled tom, trying to figure out why he made her feel like it was worth actually being friendly. His eyes did remind her a bit of Ardis's eyes, but not much. She looked down at her paws before standing back up. “So, what brings you out here this far?” she asked, her green eyes dancing with an uncharacteristic curiosity. He seemed like a fairly nice cat, not like some cats she knew.

Sprocket took note of how the she-cat preferred the shadow instead of the sunlight. He was a very observant cat and remembered little things about cats he had met, that's how he was able to get along with such a cold cat like Ice.

His ears shifted forward as he heard the cats name. "Zia? That's a pretty interesting name. I like it." He said, mostly to himself. He sometimes like to think out loud when his anxiety is acting up, which can get him into some trouble sometimes.

He sat in a soft patch of grass and wrapped his long tail around him. "I am just wandering around, I guess." He said. He was living in the Twoleg place for a bit but soon got bored, he missed nature. He left the Twoleg just a moon ago and was just traveling. Zia was only the third or fourth cat Sprocket had run into and she was the nicest. "What brings you out here?" He asked as he tilted his head. His eyes shone in the sunlight and with curiosity.

Zia watched him closely. He looked and acted as if he too didn't want a fight. That was something she still wasn't entirely used to, having been born somewhere killing each other had been like killing prey, and wasn't discouraged in any way. A smile slowly appeared on her maw as she remembered a tom that had attempted to kill her when she was a kit. She still had scars across her back from his claws.

Flicking her tail, she looked around carefully, keeping an eye out for any prey or possible threats. She heard him comment on her name, and that only confused her. It definitely wasn't something she was used to. She was used to sleeping all day, being awake from dusk to dawn, and fighting everyone with every chance she got. Recently, she'd learned that being a rogue was easier, but still wasn't used to it.

The thick furred molly nodded, her eyes slightly distant. She was sort of more focused on her past. She wondered if Sobek and Haiku were still alive. “Wanderong. Getting away from . . . certain places . . . .” she said in a end-of-topic tone, her voice somewhat hesitant.

Sprocket observed Zia carefully as she spoke, he could tell she didn't want to go into further detail and he understood. Ice was the same way when he first traveled with him. He didn't want to get into his past either, he didn't know this cat well enough.

Sprocket's stomach growled loudly and he folded his ears back in annoyance. "Sorry about that." He mumbled to himself. He knew the other cat was probably just as hungry as he was, considering it was leafbare.

Zia couldn't help but chuckle slightly as his stomach rumbled. She guessed that he was as hungry as she was. She remembered when she used to help hunt for Ardis, and again felt her deep longing for the older molly, who had passed during the first days on snow. Then she lifted her head, a
warm, musty smell touching her nose.

She instantly fell silent, staying still. It was rabbit, no doubt about to emerge from its warren. She gave a flick of her tail to Sprocket, motioning towards the dark hole several fox lengths to the side of them. Mouthing the word "rabbit", she dropped into a crouch, making a wide circle around the hole, hoping to get behind it. The smell was very strong, and it made her mouth water. She didn't trust the dappled tom, but she decided that this was how she'd test him. She would see if he would help her catch the rabbit. If he did, she would share it, and then they would go their separate ways.

He hid in a small bush near the dark hole, waiting for Zia to make the first move.

Zia gave him a nod, then began hopping around noisily, making unnatural snorting screeching meows, knowing that it was nearly breeding time for rabbits. She was acting like rabbit, then she saw a second hole and plunged into the darkness without a second thought, hoping that Sprocket knew to wait by the other hole. The walls pressed against her, solid and damp. She shivered slightly, twitching her whiskers to keep from bumping into a wall. She was following a warm scent trail, praying to the Dark Forest that she wouldn't get lost and die. She heard something fleeing through the tunnels, and gave a satisfied nod in the pressing darkness. She was glad that she wasn't afraid of enclosed spaces, although her breathing had grown fast and slightly shallow.

Zia knew that soon, she would have to give chase, so she did. She ran as fast as possible through the darkness, not caring if she hurt herself. All rational thoughts were gone as she raced after the rabbit through the darkness. Up ahead, she could see the faint outlines of the rabbit burst into a patch of light, and she slowed, waiting like a spider in a web.

Zia suddenly collided with a furry heap that smelled like the rabbit. Hissing in surprise, she lashed out with her claws, feeling skin and flesh give way and blood start pouring out from the wound, it gave her a grim, satisfied pleasure. That was worst, because she knew that the pleasure of killing was part of her, and always would be. It was too deep in her kin and unknown relatives. The rabbit kicked out in the darkness at it collapsed, jerking a few times, then falling still. Leaning forwards, she grasped hold of the limp creature iin her jaws and started to pull it out backwards, entering the daylight, where she dropped it near Sprocket, blood still seeping from the dead rabbit's throat.

Sprocket perked his ears, hearing a hiss. He assumed that Zia had ran into the rabbit but he still kept his guard up, just in case the rabbit got away from Zia. He didn't doubt her skill and he was sure if the rabbit did get away, it would get away with at least one injury. But rabbits could be tricky at times, they were fast and skittish.

His tail twitched as he smelt Zia coming closer, he narrowed his eyes and examined the dark hole. He finally spotted Zia coming closer to the hole and stepped back so she could back out easier. Sprockets mouth watered as the smell of the rabbit hit his nose. He sat down and wrapped his long tail around his paws. Zia stopped, the rabbit between them. She stared at him for a moment, not sure what exactly he meant. But she dipped her head, finding a small bit of amusement in the odd way he spoke. She stepped forwards and carefully tore off a small chunk of the animal, then padding off a couple of fox lengths, keeping her distance.

She sat down, watching to see what Sprocket would do. He'd passed her little test, but she was still very wary of strangers, especially if they were loners. She wasn't sure why, but she was less wary of ruthless murderers than she was of possibly harmless loners. Perhaps it was because she was familiar with how ruthless killers thought, and not used to the kindness of loners.

Sprocket tilted his head in confusion as he watched Zia walk away with her chuck on rabbit. "What are you doing?" He asked. He grabbed the rabbit and moved a bit closer to Zia. "I wanted to eat with you and chat." He said. He was very confused. He was used to cats being nicer but he guessed Zia wasn't used to it so he was trying to take things slow.

Zia blinked, wondering why he didn't know. To her, this was how everybody ate, but she guessed that he wasn't accustomed to it. “I'm eating. . . .” she mumbled around her chunk of rabbit, then she tilted her head, and memories of when she'd been traveling with a couple of former Clan-ers resurfaced. "Well, from my experience when you catch fresh kill together, you usually sit together and share it." He chuckled a bit. "But if you don't want to that's fine." He didn't want to force his friendliness on her, obviously the she-cat was used to eating this way since she seemed clueless on why he is confused about her moving.

He didn't want to force his friendliness on her, obviously the she-cat was used to eating this way since she seemed clueless on why he is confused about her moving.
She glanced at him, unsure. “Hmm. From my experience, doing that will get you killed or wounded at the least.” she muttered under her breath, hoping that he wouldn't hear, but not entirely caring either way. “No, it's fine. I'm just too stuck in my past. I suppose it'll be an interesting experience in the least.” she replied, her voice gaining a quiet edge that told of her uncertainty and mild interest.

Sprocket moved closer to Zia and set the rabbit down. It was a bit chilly outside but his hunger was taking over so he really didn't care. "Well, you don't have to worry about me hurting you." He said happily. He took a big bite out of the rabbit and started to eat. "So, have you been a loner all your life? or were you a kittypet or clan cat at some point?" He asked with half his mouth full.

Zia relaxed a little and took a bite of her piece of rabbit, suddenly remembering how hungry she was. The rabbit was good, better than many of the other things she'd tried eating. As he asked her, she felt a pang of homesickness, almost wanting to go back, but she shook herself. She had a job to do. She closed her eyes, picturing the black tom. “I've never been any of those things. I was born in this place called the Dusk Syndicate. Giant gang of murderous cats.” she explained calmly, taking another bite of the rabbit chunk. “Now I'm a rogue. Means I have bad history with the Clans, that's all. You?.” she went on, growing a bit more sure and a bit less uncomfortable.

Sprocket had never heard of the Dusk Syndicate before, her description of the group didn't surprise him much. He had seen so many things that nothing really bothered him anymore. Before he took another bite he answered Zia's question, "I used to be a kittypet, I am a loner now." He said. He wasn't ashamed of his past and was fully willing to tell cats about it. Most cats were just curious about the life of kittypet and the only cats he'd met who didn't like his past were the Clan cats.

He took another bite out of the rabbit and closed his eyes as he chewed. He was so glad Zia and him worked together to catch the rabbit, sharing fresh kill was better then not eating at all.

Zia nodded but said nothing. She didn't much care that he'd been a kittypet, because she knew that he wasn't like a kittypet. A cat that was like a kittypet would be ashamed to say so, and it was pretty obvious that he was not. She took another bite of her chunk of rabbit meat, realizing that that was the last of her chunk. She was still hungry, but she waited for a moment.

She blinked, then slunk forwards and dropped down on her side next to the rabbit so that it was easier to access when she wanted some. She glanced around, her green hues settling on Sprocket. “It's nice here.” she said, looking from valley to maintains to river to Sprocket.

Sprocket was glad Zia didn't comment on her past, obviously she didn't care if he was a kittypet or not and that made him happy. He was tired of being judged by his kittypet past. Zia flicked her tail towards the sky, her eyes growing dark with worry. She stood up, yawning and licking her lips to clear any remaining scraps of rabbit. “Well, I'm going to find somewhere sheltered to rest.” she said, able to taste the threat of snow in the wind. You could be stuck in a den for days, he watched Zia leave. He wasn't sure if he should follow her or find his own den, he perked his ears as she started to come back. "Not really, do you care if I stay with you in the den?" He asked.

Zia chuckled slightly. She wasn't at all surprised by his answer, as who would want to get caught in a snowstorm? She shifted uneasily nevertheless. “I do mind, but, I'd rather not have a cat die because I can't stay in a smallish space with another cat for a short period of time.” she replied, then carefully took hold of the rabbit's leg and started dragging it towards the den.

Sprocket chuckled a bit, 'Well, at least still likes me enough to not kill me. Hopefully.' He thought. He followed Zia to the hollow tree, it was somewhat small but neither him or Zia were huge cats. He wasn't sure how long the snow would last, but he hoped it was short and sweet. He didn't mind Zia, but he did not want to be stuck in a small place with her.

Zia watched him warily, hoping that if he made any move to harm her, she would be ready. She wasn't sure he would, but she knew better than to leather guard down. She knew who that could go, and often it wasn't well. She settled into a comfortable crouch, her eyes never leaving the mottled tom. The somewhat larger cat was quite glad that the rabbit could be placed between them, sort of as an obstacle. Then she looked around, remembering the time she'd been in a place like this. The time she'd rescued a molly from bleeding out using techniques Ardis had taught her. At that, a hint of sadness entered her gaze, and she shuffled uncomfortably, feeling again the pangs of longing for the crippled tabby who had always been like a mother and a friend to her. Quickly she shoved away those memories and looked back towards Sprocket.

Sprocket looked around the den, he started to get lost in thought as he laid down. He hadn't noticed Zia watching him, his eyes glazed over. He was thinking about the first time he was in a den like this, it was after Ice had helped him leave his Twolegs. Ice and him spent moons in a hollowed out tree, Sprocket had many injuries and had to be fixed up before they went out. He sighed a bit, he missed Ice but soon the two cats began to fight and they chose to go their separate ways just for a few moons. Being stuck together all the time didn't make the best relationship, especially since Ice liked to keep moving and Sprocket tended to stay at one place for a long amount of time.

He shook the thoughts away and glanced at Zia just as she turned back to look at him. He tilted his head to the side and observed the she-cat. He searched his mind for something to say, not realizing the funny faces he was making as he thought.

Zia watched him, realizing that he seemed to have completely put his guard down. She didn't allow herself to relax a whole lot, but she did relax just a little bit, knowing that if he tried anything, she would be ready. She looked him over again and realized that he didn't at all look like the type to try and hurt her, and she gave her head a shake, calming herself down. She rested her head on her paws, waiting. Outside, she could see snowflakes falling down so thickly that visibility was very poor after the fist two tail lengths, and eventually it just became nearly impossible to see. She blinked, remembering a few of the other cats she'd met, like Sheer, Crystalpaw, Moonfang and Abysslight. Those had all been Clan-ers, although Sheer had gone rogue and killed Abysslight, but that she knew was not all a bad thing. Zia shook herself, realizing that she'd been drifting off and had been about to fall asleep.

She glanced again towards Sprocket, deciding that she would break the silence before it stretched on too far. “So, have you had any adventures?” she asked cautiously, keeping her voice calm and gentle, like she might when tricking a cat into giving her information that she could use against them, but of course, she wasn't doing that.

Zia nodded, then looked outside, and realized that the snow was now rain. Pleased by this, she wrapped her tail over her large dark paws, head tilted off to one side a bit. She couldn't really see how that was an adventure, but she guessed that it was, depending on perspective. She watched the rain fall, and after a moment, she wondered if it last newleaf had arrived. A faint smile spread across her maw, and the dark furred molly stood, the faint tabby stripes hidden at random in her pelt becoming slightly visible.

She doubted that she ever would, even once everyone else had. She also wondered how her mother was, but didn't care very much on that subject. Sprocket had always been a positive cat, even if he didn't show it much. His friend Ice liked to say he was his sunshine on a normally cloudy day. Zia shrugged. She didn't see what was so special about any of those things. Sure, they were nice, but she saw no real reason to smile about them. The only reason she'd smiled about the rain was it meant that the snowstorm was over and newleaf had arrived. All her f which were good things. The sun, she had been raised to wake up at dusk and go to sleep at dawn, she she was less than excited about that. The last one, she didn't get. She wasn't sure why anyone would want to meet her. She gave a confused flick of her tai. “Why smile about meeting someone like me? You hardly know me, and if you ever did, you'd not be smiling anymore.” she muttered, scuffing one paw in the dirt. She was the kind of cat who speant a lifetime tracking down a cat to get her revenge on them. Not the kind of cat most cats liked. Zia wanted to say that she had only been being kind to him because she didn't benefit from killing him, but she held her tongue, somehow knowing that that wasn't really true. “I guess, but we could also be dead a moon from now, so I try not to focus on the future unless it holds a meeting with a . . . certain . . . cat.” she said quietly. Zia tilted her head, trying to see his response as normal, but her Dusk Syndicate past was too firmly embedded in her way of thinking for her to completely do so. For her, that was like saying "I want to grow wings but never fly". Why have the possibility of more but never go for it? She wanted to die in combat, as that was the proper way to go in her point of view. “I suppose that's true, you never know what could happen.” she replied, although she had her plans and hopes, although they involved her killing another cat, who she doubted she would ever kill. “Maybe. . . .” she began, then trailed off as Sprocket continued. Zia opened her green orbs, everything a blurr. With a start, she realized that she'd fallen asleep, but to her relief, she was still alive and unharmed, which she'd honestly expected. Blinking the sleep from her eyes, she tilted her head. She couldn't hear the rain anymore, and Sprocket was asleep. She got to her paws and padded silently around Sprocket out of the den. She wasn't going to leave him, at least, not yet. She wanted to say goodbye when she was ready to part with him. She looked around, leaping on to a large rock, where she hoped to see the sun rise, as the sky was a rosy pink, and sunrise couldn't be far off. Usually, this was the time where she would crawl into her nest, but she'd transited to sleeping at night not long ago.

Sprocket jumped awake, he hissed loudly as his stood. His fur was puffed up and his claws out, it took a few moments for the toms pupils to widen and to realized where he was. He sighed and shook his fur, trying to make it look neat once again. He didn't want Zia to see he had been startled. He looked around the den and noticed she had left, his heart raced as he thought Zia left him already. When he stepped out the den and noticed her on the rock he let out a sigh of relief. The sun was just rising and he padded up to the rock and climbed up to sit with her. "Morning. " he mewed.

Zia closed her eyes, memories of her days in the nursery sweeping over her. She wasn't sure why she'd suddenly remembered them, but wasn't going to complain. She opened her eyes, realizing that she'd been around half-siblings and never even known it. She sighed, opening her eyes, although squinting now as the golden rays of sunlight hit her eyes. Then she heard a voice and spun around, teeth bared and fur raised. Then she realized that it was only Sprocket and quickly she relaxed, her lips going back down to cover her teeth. She nodded. “Sorry.” she mumbled. She'd been to caught up in her own thoughts to notice that he'd come up behind her.

Zia shook her head. She should've been more alert than she'd been, and she made a mental note to be more alert at all times. “Nah, I should've been more alert. I guess we're both to blame.” she said, a purr starting up for a few heartbeats, but quickly fading away. At this she actually cracked a grin. “Magic!” she exclaimed, swiping her tongue over her lips.

Oh shoot I thought I responded}

Sprocket tilted his head as the she-cat began to purr but he was surprised as it quickly faded away. He smiled back at her, he was confused for a few moments when she yelled 'Magic!' but soon began to laugh. After a few moments of laughing he looked at her, "Sorry I am not laughing at you. I just thought it was funny." he said with a chuckled.

Zia joined in, for only a heartbeat, then her laughter faded. “I know.” she replied, and then she got up, stretching her forelegs out in front of herself and yawning, then quickly padding back into the den and grabbing the remains of the rabbit they'd caught earlier and dragging it back to where Sprocket was waiting.

Zia dropped it between them, her dark gray fur glinting faintly with hints of reddish brown inherited from her father, who she hoped to visit soon, despite the fact that he was, well, dead. “No problem.” she mumbled, then shook her head. “No thanks. I'll wait a bit, I usually don't eat until the air has warmed up a bit.” she said, which was mostly true, although had she said that a few moons ago, it wouldn't have been.

Sprocket nodded his head, he wasn't going to question her eating schedule. He took a bite out of the cat and closed his eyes. It tasted so good, he quickly ate three more bites. He was pretty filled up and decided to leave the rest for Zia before he ate more. His amber hues observed the surroundings, it was so peaceful her. His lavender scent seemed to be more prominent this morning, most cats have told him that. He wasn't sure why but that's just the way it was, "How did you sleep?" His country accent slipping out, he was still somewhat tired and wasn't concerned about controlling his voice. The only reason he tried to control it was because some cats have a hard to understand him.

Zia nodded, tucking her paws under her chest and staring off into the distance, her thoughts focused on a black tom with blue eyes and a black tom with a reddish brown head and classic white tuxedo marking. The black tom, who's name she hated above all other things, was Onyx. He'd killed her father, and she was proud to say that Bleddyn, for that was her father's name, had told her that himself. She flicked her dark ears, opening her jaws and tasting the air, noting that Sprocket smelled faintly of lavender, while she smelled like rabbit blood and softened and decaying wood, an odd combination, but pleasing in her opinion. “Fairly good. And yours?” that had become a habit of hers, repeating one's question back to them, just worded ever so slightly different, if not the same or a lot different. She heard an odd accent in his voice, but could tell well enough, for she'd been around another cat with a similar accent before, though their name had been long and hard to pronounce or even understand.

Zia nodded, though she guessed that he was hiding something, but she felt no need to ask what, so she didn't, as it was none of her business. She glanced around, her green eyes cloudy with a multitude of racing emotions, but most of all was her burning desire for revenge. Soon, she would resume her search for Onyx, then maybe she'd settle for a bit assuming she lived the assumed encounter that she was waiting for. “Mhm. . . .” she muttered, closing her eyes, still unsure of why she Hadley herself be around him. It was bad, as she didn't want to get used to the company.

(That's fine, and honestly it kinda cheered me up a bit, so thanks)

Zia stared at him with widened eyes, not sure how to respond. That was a sort of kindness never shown to her or anyone she was "friends" with. So, she held her tongue and did not reply, although she was still deciding whether or not she would in the end. She looked him over, trying to decide how truthful his words were. “Everything's fine for now.” she said carefully. She didn't want to lie, so she told him to truth. Everything was fine, although it possibly wouldn't be in the near future. “That I don't, and it's not any of your business.” she didn't add that it could end up being his business if she accidentally dragged him into her mess.

Zia lowered her gaze, wanting to just stand up and run away, never looking back, but she knew that if she did that, her chances of getting her revenge would only grow slimmer than they already were, so she did not. Plus, she didn't want to leave Sprocket without any explanation at all, so that was yet another reason not to. Nodding in agreement, she rose to her paws. "Sure.

Zia nodded, following swiftly after the mottled brown tom, her fur sticking up slightly due to her having not groomed her pelt. Shaking her head, she realized that she hadn't eaten, but she wasn't that hungry, and still wasn't used to eating while the sun was up. “Over here!” she called, turning and racing to the river. There were a few large stones that with a good leap, she could reach and cross the river. Perhaps there would be something interesting on the other bank.

She leaped, enjoying the feeling of weightlessness as she soared through the air, her paws skidding as she slipped on the smooth surface of wet stone, then her claws found purchase and she managed to keep from slipping into the river. "I like solid land, where I can't slip and fall off of rocks." he said. The slip from the rock sure gave him a big fright, he was going to stay on solid ground for a while before trying to jump rocks again. (me and my brothers like to do that in the summer lol)

Zia nodded understandingly, as she liked solid ground too, and preferred it to water any day. Unfortunately, everything was still wet from the heavy rainfall. She collapsed on her side, half hidden by the tall grass, of course, now beads of water rolled on to her pelt and soaked in, chilling her. She ignored it though and listened to the soft birdsong. She nearly smiled, her jaw slightly parted. This place was peaceful and beautiful, and she wondered if maybe, once all she was after was over, she might come back here and settle down.

Sprocket observed the scenery around him, he smiled a bit at the nature. He noticed a large pine tree and trotted towards it, he sniffed around it carefully then looked up to see how far up it went. He crouched a bit and bunched up his hind leg muscles, he studied the tree carefully. He was trying to find a good place to land on the tree, he wasn't sure if he should aim for the low branches or stick to the trunk. His eyes glowed with delight as he made his decision and sprigged through the air, he landed on one of the lower branches and balanced himself out. He continued to make his way up the tree, either by climbing or jumping from close branches.

Zia raised her large head, watching Sprocket intently as he walked away from where he'd been only moments before. At first, she wondered what he was doing, and why. But she now saw that he was climbing a tree, and her orbs followed him as he progressed up the tall, thin pine. She wasn't all sure why he was doing it, or if there was even any point to it at all. Sighing quietly, the large molly heaved herself to her paws and padded silently through the tall grasses, heading for the pine Sprocket was in. Tilting her head up, she watched him for a second, then she launched herself skyward, gripping the lowest branch firmly in her long curved claws and heaving herself up. She didn't look like she should be a quick, agile climber, but she actually was quite good, and she quickly got to the branch just below Sprocket. "What're ya doing up here?" she asked, sitting down and ripping the branch to ensure that she didn't fall off, which would most likely be certain death.

Sprocket continued to climb, the smell of the pine filling up his nostrils. His ears laid flat against his small head as he got closer to the top, pine trees never lost their leaves during the leaf-bare so it was always hard to see out of them once you climbed them but Sprocket was able to move the branches and stare at the scenery. He jumped as he heard the she-cats voice, he hadn't realized she was behind him. He began to lick down his now fluffed up fur, he was kinda embarrassed that he had gotten scared so easily. "If you move the branches the scenery is beautiful!" He mewed. "I used to climb trees a lot when I was younger and watch the nature." He purred. He sunk his small claws into the tree branch he was on, for some reason he always felt home in the trees. He moved some of the branches to look out once more, the sun reflected against his eyes as he admired the scene.

Zia took in the rich, heavy scent of sap and pine. She remembered the pines from her home, but that also reminded her of why she'd left, instead of stay, like her siblings had. She'd left so she could achieve something greater and do it by herself. While she'd been doing that, her father had died in battle. She had talked to him after he'd died and that'd been good. Zia shook her head, realizing that she was trembling. Hopefully the dull rock of the tree in the breeze and her thick fur covered that up. Finally, she looked at Sprocket and realized he'd been talking. Nodding, she instead crept further out on the branch so that it swayed and bobbed dangerously, but she didn't mind. Instead, she rested so that the branch was under her belly, and both legs on either side dangled off the branch. It was a funny position, but an easy one to hold, and it helped her lay flat to the skinny branch. “Ah. A friend of mine told me how and instructed me how.” she replied, her voice shaky as she remembered that. Ardis herself couldn't climb, nor walk, but once had been able to.

Sprocket turned his ears towards the she-cat, he was still looking out at the scenery. "I was always interested in climbing, I tried it a lot when I was a kittypet." He said. Memories flashed back of him being a young kit and trying to climb the biggest tree in his Twolegs yard, it was a tall maple. Sprocket always enjoyed the colors of the tree during leaf-fall, "But it wasn't until an old friend of mine, Ice, had help me escape my Twolegs that I finally learned how to climb properly. I've been in love with it since." He mewed. His eyes were clouded over as memories came flooding back, the last time he had seen his friend was many, many moons ago. He shook his head, trying to push the memories away once more. He finally looked at Zia, a glint of humor shone in his eyes as he saw her position. He chuckled to himself a bit and watched his friend with a tilted head.

Zia nodded, her eyes never leaving the foothills of the mountains that spread out past the horizon and to the end of where she could see. She listened to Sprocket in silence, her eyes clouded with thought. She wondered why it'd been so long since she'd spoken to Bleddyn. She missed him, and her heart still burned with rage from when she'd been told that Onyx had killed him. Not realizing it, a low growl rumbled from deep in her chest, and she stared down the long drop back to the earth. Suddenly she realized that she was doing it and stopped herself, shaking her head. Heaving her legs back on to the branch,
she turned her head and looked at Sprocket, unafraid of the dangerously rocking branch she stood on. “Sprocket, why didn't you just leave in the night?” she asked, her eyes dark with uncertainty. She had only just now realized that that seemed kind of odd to her.

Sprockets ears twitched a bit at her question. He closed his eyes and thought for a few moments, whenever he spoke of his Twolegs it still had a very emotional affect on him. He really didn't want to get choked up in front of Zia, "My Twolegs were... Different. They stayed up all night and brought other Twolegs with them. They did unspeakable things to me and another cat that was there." He stopped for a moment. His eyes clouded over as he was broke back into the memories, "They would sleep mostly during the day but since I couldn't get outside I was stuck there. There was a certain window of time that I was aloud outside." He finished. He shook his head and cleared his throat, his eyes brighten up. "But it's okay now. I am free and I met a new friend!" He said and looked at Zia. No cat except for Ice knew what Sprocket went through, no cat ever saw the long scar along his belly.

Zia slowly stood up and crept closer to the trunk of the pine, leaping on to the branch above her head, which was also the branch next to Sprocket.
She moved silently, not wanting to interrupt him while he spoke. She sat down, her back nearly touching the trunk, as the branch here was slightly thinner than the one below it. She couldn't imagine being stuck somewhere, unable to escape and being hurt, as that was what she'd guessed he'd meant by "unspeakable things". But she knew that it must've been awful, it sounded a bit like the Dusk Syndicate in some aspects. She sighed, realizing that that wasn't an answer to her question. Shaking her head, she looked down at the ground, her eyes half closed and pupils mere slits. Flicking her tail, she stood up, realizing how hungry she now was. Without a word, she began the descent down the tree, eager to reach the rabbit they'd killed just yesterday.

Sprocket smirked a bit as he watched his friend make her way down the tree. "Did you finally get hungry?" He chuckled. He made his way down the tree behind Zia and after getting closer to the ground he jumped from the trunk and landed lightly on his paws. "I am going to go hunting again while you finish up the rabbit." He mewed. "Maybe I can try and catch fish!" He joked.

Zia paused at the last branch and looked up at Sprocket, her eyes glinting, reflecting the pine needles she had to peer through to see him. “Yeah.” she said, chuckling a bit as she said it. She leaped off, closely followed by Sprocket. Nodding she turned, heading towards the remains of the rabbit. “Don't fall in!” Zia called over her shoulder as she broke into a run, already smelling the rabbit. Once at the hollow tree, she settled beside the rabbit, quickly devouring the bits of that hadn't hardened very much yet, as meat when left uneaten quickly stiffened up and lost some of the flavor.

Sprocket chuckled, "I'll try not to!" He said as the she-cat ran off. The mottled tom made his way to the river and watched it carefully. His claws unsheathed as he started to aim for a fish, his claws were small but very sharp. He kneaded his paws into the ground, getting soil and grass all over them. He rose his soil covered paw and aimed for a silver fish, he felt water surround his paw and he reached out for a hint for any flesh. When he couldn't find any he brought his paw back up out the water. He scowled at his paw and peeked over the water once more. His tail lashed as he watched it, the fish moved so quickly that when Sprockets paw dove underwater the fish was already gone. Sprocket flatten his ears as he thought, 'Maybe if I aim where the fish would be I would be able to catch it.'. The tom waited once more and lifted his paws as he aimed, this time he looked for a fish heading his way and waited for the right moment. His muscles rippled underneath his pelt as his paw splashed into the water. He felt his claws sink into slippery flesh and quickly pulled his hand out of the water. As the fish landed on the grass he quickly bit its neck and watched it go limp.

Zia quickly ate what was left of the rabbit and hurried to bury the bones, not wanting to attract any unwanted visitors, such as dogs, wolves or foxes. None of which she was in the mood to run from or fight at the moment, or honestly any moment, which had once been something she revelled in doing, but not quite as much anymore. She heard a splash and saw Sprocket with one wet paw and no fish. Chuckling, he came and sat beside him, watching to see if he'd figure it out. She knew already because a loner, Abysslight if she remembered correctly, who'd once been a RiverClan warrior had taught her, although she'd never been any good and had decided to stick with hunting on land. She watched him for a moment, then stepped up and crouched next yo him, careful not to slip in the thick, dark mud, she positioned one paw over the water and held still, waiting. As soon as a fish swam close enough, she flashed out her paw, claws extended and knocked her paw against where it was going to be a heartbeat in the future and she felt scales scrape her paw pad. Quickly she scooped it out and dropped it on to land, dispatching it with a quick bite to the head. She wasn't fond of fish, but she figured one fish wasn't enough for them to save up. She examined it, taking note of what kind it was, because some tasted better than others. It was just a darter, but those weren't bad. “Nice catch.” she grunted, looking up.

Zia nodded sheepishly, remembering the black furred queen who'd taught her when she was about four moons. She looked away, then back at him. “Yeah. When I was trainee age, after I'd left the Syndicate, meant Ardis . . . .” her voice trailed off, taking on a sad note after that. “We met these two mollys and their kits. Two of the kits were sick and dying, and one of them died. I don't know what happened to the other. But anyways, one of the queens was from RiverClan, and she taught me to fish. I guess she thought of me as her kit, but I don't know.” Zia chuckled. In a sense, she'd been raised by three cats. First her mother, then Ardis, then Abysslight and back to Ardis. “She told me all about RiverClan and how they hunted and stored their food. Anyways, you can store fish, but it's tricky.” she finished, realizing that she'd gotten rather sidetracked and had accidentally spilled more of her past than she had meant to. Embarrassed, she picked up the fish and padded to the shore, digging a hole deep enough that it flowed with water about a mouse length deep. Dropping her catch in, she pushed mud over it. The idea was to keep it moist and cool, which in turn kept it fresher longer.

She figured it was just because she was a bit embarrassed of having given away that much of her past. A past she wanted to bury deep and forget about for the most part. She turned sharply and looked at Sprocket. Like was a but strong in her opinion, so she just shrugged and looked around, padding off a ways. Zia listened closely to what Sprocket said, and she could see that.
She'd met a couple of pure, true kittypets before and knew that they'd been whiny and pampered and had clearly never seen bloodshed and fights before, based on their horrified expressions when they'd seen her fight a dog and act like thefew minor cuts she'd received were fetal or something. She didn't like fish either, but Zia always ate what was available. “Mmm . . . . Fish don't taste great either. How cats can live off the stuff all their lives beats me.” she said,
trying to push the darker, more ominous thoughts from her mind, including what Sprocket had said about her opening up to him. Abysslight had smelled like fish constantly. That smell was one Zia would never forget, and whenever she smelled it, she had always wrinkled her nose. In fact, she still wrinkled her nose whenever the smell of fish became too strong.

“Its hard to describe, so I'll leave you to learn that for yourself.
” she commented, her fur flattening. Zia watched him, starting to feel more relaxed than before as the previous conversation was driven from her thoughts. She nodded, but still said nothing. She studied the rocks and hoped that there weren't any snakes basking under them, as snakes so often slept under rocks. How they could do that without smushing themselves was beyond her. “I'll stay up.” she said with little hesitation, then she turned, getting ready to explore this side of the river for a little bit. To one side she saw mountains,
and the other there was rolling hills. She knew where those lead. Upstream were a few more trees and some goldenrod. Zia gave Sprocket a northern padded off towards the goldenrod, curious to see what might be lying hidden in it.

(I know right?! I was no expecting it at all!)

Sprocket nodded, "I might just take a small nap." He purred. He let out a light yawn and curled himself up, he heard Zia walked up but didn't concern himself about it. She was obligated to be with him all the time, they had just met after all. The warm rocks felt nice underneath him and he soon fell into a light sleep.

Zia didn't hear him, but she wouldn't have reacted any differently if she had heard him. The large dark furred molly padded into the goldenrod, dodging around the tall golden-green stalks. She loved the way the yellow flowers in the tip of each tall plant smelled, and the way the rustled in the cool breeze that blew down from the mountains. She spotted a log that was partially rotted and rather old. She leaped on to it, stretching and sharpening her claws on the soft, decaying wood.

(thank you for the bump! I had a lot of post quote notifications come through and I must've missed yours)

Sprocket opened his eyes once more, expecting to see the river and the grass around him but instead found himself in a Twolegs den, a house, he remembered the word he had used as a kittypet. Once he had left his Twolegs he wanted to leave everything he knew as a kittypet behind, including the words he used as a kittypet. He wrinkled his nose as a rank scent hit his nose, the smell seemed so familiar but he couldn't remember what the scent was. His eyes widen and his back arched as he heard loud, thumping noises through the wall and bright flashing lights, he finally realized he was back in his Twolegs house. White hot pain surged through him as a long stick with smoke coming out of it pressed against his flank. He yelped loudly and turned to find his Twolegs laughing along with other Twolegs. The tom began to run but could fell the Twolegs strange paws grabbing at his tail and flank, the tom closed his eyes once more and jumped awake. His claws dug into the soil, he stood with his back arched and his hair stood on end. His fur began to flatten as he realized where he was, he took in the scents around him and began to calm down. He licked his chest to try and flatten his fur, he let out a loud sigh and began to follow Zias scent, his fear scent still clinging to him.

It was quite a relaxing sound, and soon she found that she was in a very light sleep, where the sweet smell of the bright yellow flowers and tall green stems never left her. This smell wasn't like anything in the Syndicate, but it was comforting in a way. Then she heard noises and leaped up, aroused from her half sleeping daze. She heard a pained yelping noise coming from the direction of Sprocket, and quickly set off at a nice, quick pace in that direction, only to run headlong into him and stumble backwards, blinking. “What was that about?” Zia asked, groaning slightly as her jaw moved, but she didn't really mind the pain. She was referring of course to the yelping noises, not to bumping into him, but it could've sounded either way to just about anyone.

( Sorry it's so late! )

Sprocket wasn't paying attention and suddenly felt a body slam against him. He fell onto his bottom and he looked around with wide eyes, it took him a few moments to notice Zia. "Oh, sorry. I wasn't paying attention.." He mumbled. "Are you alright?" he asked, he was clearly avoiding the question. He didn't mind talking about his Twolegs but he didn't like to let others know he still had nightmares about them.

(Sorry its late and so short I've been busy:
