But the healers have no wings, so they depend on the apprentices to fetch herbs unless they have a warrior carry them down into the forest to gather herbs and to carry them back up. Elders loose their wings when they are too old to fly anymore

I see, 3 moons then. Because at At 1 - 3 moons the mother carryign her kits will lay eggs and they will hatch at 3 moons, but the mother is confined to caring for the egg until it hatches. Then the Egg Mother will further on nurse it. your not a newborn.
An egg mother every year is assigned by the medicine cat, they are given borage to keep up their milk supply. Sometimes the egg mother can lay eggs, and sometimes not.
