For all her life, Amberpaw's never been known as pretty. Or beautiful. Or even really known what "love" is...but from what she's heard it's just a sea of heartbreak. She doesn't ever want to get involved in some big, romantic love story where she plays a heartbroken she cat with a worthless mate. But when (Tom 1) begins to show attraction to her, Amberpaw fakes attraction back. For the first time in her life, she's unsure of what to do. She doesn't actually like this tom, but there's no way out...she's trapped. He's handsome and friendly, but he's not the kind of cat Amberpaw would want if she were to decide to take a mate. The more she tries to suggest that she wants out, the more (Tom 1) tries to get her alone and have what he refers to as "romantic" moments with her. But for Amberpaw, all this is is a nightmare. Amberpaw goes to (She cat 1) a kithood friend who has had a major interest in (Tom 1) forever. And she's jealous of the tom's attraction to Amberoaw. She decides to figure out a way to separate the two for good...and what better way to do that then to introduce (Tom 2) into their midst? Amberpaw takes to the tom's flirtatious ways and charm, leaving with him and leaving (Tom 1) heartbroken. For the first time, Amberpaw feels like she really belongs. For the first time she understands why love is such a special and fragile thing, and for the first time she is pretty. No, she is beautiful. Time passes, and (Tom 2) is still flirting with Amberpaw, while secretly meeting (She cat 1) and telling her how stupid Amberpaw is being. One day, while walking down certain tunnels that she and (Tom 2) found, Amberpaw overhears something that she doesn't want to. (She cat 1) and (Tom 2's) conversation. Heartbroken, Amberoaw flees to the Camp where she has no idea what she wants to do. A second she cat, (She cat 2) approaches her and tries to get her attention, trying to cheer her up.
As the moons pass, Amberpaw's broken heart begins to heal and she is nearing her time to become a warrior. By now she and (She cat 2) are close friends, and although Amberpaw hasn't so much as looked at another tom, she can still feel the heartbreak from moons ago.
After receiving her warrior name, Amberflame goes out to the border. Although disloyalty is something she abhors, she doesn't feel like being loyal. She meets a third tom and she cat, (Tom 3) and (She cat 3). Amberpaw begins to converse with them, and returns to the border the next day. Eventually she's forgotten all about her broken heart and, still a young warrior, does so,etching rash. She becomes mates with the tom and ends up having his kits. Horrified with what she has done, Amberheart lives the life of a loner for a while until who but (Tom 1) comes looking for her. Now with his own family, they have a talk about love and (Tom 2's) trickery. Amberflame goes back to the Clan, confused and lost. She's realized she never lost her feelings for (Tom 2) and goes to tell him a second time until (She cat 1) approaches, announcing she's pregnant with (Tom 2's) kits. Amberflame is getting ready to go back to (Tom 3) before (She cat 2) convinces her to still go and talk to (Tom 2.) Amberflame is no longer sure whether she has feelings for (Tom 2) and still, she goes to him. After speaking to him for a while, Amberflame discovers that he, like her, has made a mistake. But now both have mates; and neither want to break the news that they made a mistake. Unfortunately, troubled times can get a whole lot more troubled. Amberflame has her first litter of 4 kits, but one is stillborn and one is small and sickly. (Tom 2) is there for her whether Amberflame wants him to be or not. Despite both still having mates, (Tom 2) offers to pose as the kits' Father. Although neither one cares to admit it, it's beginning to grow obvious that they do, in fact, have feelings for each other.
Meanwhile. (She cat 1) is plotting again...this time to get rid of Amberflame once and for all. She lures Amberflame to the tunnels where she and Amberflame used to play as young apprentices, when the rocks cave in and trap Amberflame inside the cave- she can't hold her breath forever and beside that, she's injured. Luckily for her, (Tom 2,) having realized his feelings for Amberflame, is walking through the tunnels to find her. He gets a small group together and digs her out, taking her to the Medicine Cat's Den while telling her his feelings. Although Amberflame feels the same way about him, she still has a mate...and (She cat 1) has told him the whole story. They decide to get rid of (Tom 2) this time- but with a foolproof, good old fashioned attack. (She cat 2,) catching wind of this plan, warns Amberflame...and she finds (Tom 2) lying close to death near the entrance of the tunnels. It's then that she decides she doesn't care if she already has a mate- he probably did this to (Tom 2,) he isn't worth it. The Medicine Cat manages to save (Tom 2's) life and the two rather awkwardly proceed to raise her kits together. At last, this smart, witty she cat and flirtatious, somewhat conceited tom have found their steady flames.
